Music : Rock : Lossless

Notes to The British Drive 2.0:

. This is not a vol. 2 (a continuation), it's a version 2 (a slight rework). It's mostly the same tracks as in version 1.0 of "The British Drive," plus about 20 more, and everything has gone through a much better rearrangement. A FEW TRACKS (maybe 2 or 3) HAVE BEEN UPDATED to better versions. I gave the first collection a bit more thought after it was ready and concluded there was no sense in keeping a bonus disc that big when many of the 11 albums could easily hold 30 songs instead of the previously intended 25.
. All albums now have 5 more songs each, taking from the extras disc and new files which I hadn't got before in FLAC. As far as I can remember, no songs were deleted from v 1.0, only moved around, but, again, A FEW TRACKS WERE UPDATED to better versions.
. There's VAST improvement in the timeline. Several tracks were moved around within the albums and between albums.
. New info file largely updated.
. Minor corrections in filenames.
. New tags for everything.
. You ask: should you get this if you already have v 1.0? If you cared enough to get v 1.0, then sure, I guess you would be interested in deleting that and replacing it with this one. All in all, it's that same collection, only largely improved.
. THERE'S NOT GONNA BE A v 3.0! I could maybe come up with a new CD13 in a few years, but this project is closed for now.

The British Drive v 2.0:
Britpop-rock from the 1960s to the 2010s in 360 iconic songs

Curated and compiled by Gargumma

A BIT OF HISTORY ON THIS

It was early 2008 when I got disappointed with a then newly-released boxset named "Brit Box: U.K. Indie, Shoegaze, and Brit Pop Gems of the Last Millennium." I usually feel that boxsets in general never seem to get it right when they want to compile the best and most significant tracks of a given time.

So... what if I came up with one of these myself, with no copyright or recording company constraints, just the ACTUAL best and most significant stuff, showing the evolution of the -- let's call it loosely -- "genre" of Britpop-rock? I wouldn't base my thing on any preexisting boxset, only on the idea of making one.

I started taking note of artists and song titles I could remember by heart, and planned it to be maybe just as long as that example above -- about 4 discs would do. That original plan was soon abandoned when I realized the scope of the task. The list went on growing and growing, as there were so many names I just couldn't leave behind. And then there was a point when I had to establish actual rules for building the beast, so that it wouldn't end up all arbitrary or to my personal tastes only. Just coming up with those rules took a while. I wanted to objectively follow a timeline and to represent what the concept of "Britpop" meant not only to the 1990s, but also all the way there from the so-called "British Invasion" (an admittedly American perspective) up until the directly influenced era of the 2000s and beyond. You can see these rules below.

One thing that usually annoys the hell out of me in those compilations is the fact that they reserve the meat for the first spots, and then from a point on it's all just fillers -- stuff that is cheaper for the record company to acquire. That's something I consciously set out not to do; every album should always start and end with very representative tracks, but also bring the most solid material in the mid-range and keep the high quality flowing nonstop. It should really bring up the best, not just "random music from such and such era." And it should represent that very loose idea of "genre," but never losing sight of the pop-rock being produced in the UK at a given time. Because of that conceptual vagueness, you'll find some nuances of early hard rock, or poppy tracks, or even some that flirt with dance music -- but each one was thought as having contributed to the spirit of the '90s Britpop, and then onwards with some stuff inspired by that Britpop era and all that came before.

Apart from my top of mind notes, I went and listened to over unique 2,000 songs for this purpose alone during the 8 1/2 years that followed. (Of course I didn't know at first I would only finish this project in mid-2016, using some occasional spare time and disposition.) The many different versions of a given song -- single, album, remastered, edit, remixed, whatever -- would take that number to about 2,500 tracks listened. And I probably downloaded around 3,000 files just to compare and cherry pick the best-sounding versions, all of them the most genuine, flawless FLACs. Some of the more recent tracks are only available in loud, highly compressed, distorted form, unfortunately; and then some oldies were only available in their oldies-sounding format; but lots of great older music has been remastered already, some neatly. The job had to be carefully executed.

Some songs were no-brainers; some I loved, but couldn't include since it was not just based on personal taste; some artists were better represented by tracks other than I first imagined; to my surprise, some artists were or weren't even British, and some tracks belonged to very different times than what I first imagined. About 30% of what ended up in the final collection I had simply never heard of before. And even among the ones I knew better, some I hadn't given much thought to, in terms of timing and importance, simultaneity and innovation. It should be stressed that I wanted to organize my thoughts and learn a lot more about my favourite music, and of course have loads of fun while doing it. Mission accomplished on all fronts.

In the process, some tracks were left aside, but I kept them around in the same general folder as replacements and "could-have-beens." You can see those leftover tracks in the loosely-organized 12th bonus disc, composed only of extra tracks. They are numbered according to the disc they would/could originally belong to, not as a proper 12th album. See the rules for more on that. Also, the 11 albums were not designed to fit on actual CDs. The CD format is pretty much outdated by now, and this is supposed to be a digital collection only. But you do with it whatever you feel like doing.

It must be lamented that Britpop itself and Britpop-influenced music have fallen so sharply since I started this project. One of the final decisions I made was to include a disc representing more recent times (2008-2016) and, gotta tell ya, that proved quite difficult at first. I had maybe 10 good names initially and had to carefully research the other 20, finding lots of good stuff in the process (also, some terrible -- I'm looking at you, Athlete, Bastille, Metronomy, The script and a few others), but Britpop itself, unfortunately, hasn't meant much to the music mainstream for a while now. Some of the bands who had been around for a while would make it big later on, so they could and should be included again. But some fantastic new acts had seemingly started quietly (for me, at least), and I had never heard of them before I started working on this. With some extra effort, that last album came out just as incredible as the 10 previous ones, as you can see by the amount of extra tracks.

I only wish all that good music would start taking over again and would displace the miserable crap that populates the charts these days. I'm getting old. "Now, listen, kids..."

THE INITIAL "RULES":

- It's gonna be 10 albums.
- Each album has 25 songs in it.
- All albums begin and end with big tracks.
- It follows a chronological order, just not being too obsessive about it.
- The compilation is concerned with a general overview of the best of British pop and rock in the given timeframe, and, at the same time, will also be oriented having in mind the mid-1990s Britpop movement. That means albums 1-6 were meant as "influences", 7-9 cover the period itself and 10 brings the acts directly influenced and more contemporary.
- Each artist/band shows up only once per album with a significant track. If significant enough themselves, they can figure on more than one album -- no more than three times in the whole collection (guaranteed examples: The Beatles, The Stones, Blur, Oasis). Group and solo participations and composition credits won't exclude possibilities.
- The chosen tracks are as much as possible the most relevant and/or "best" representatives for each artist and time period, but...
- ... I have to at least like the song (and I stress: personal taste is an important, even if not determining criterium). This has disqualified a few songs and acts, but they have always been replaced with care.

THE RESULTS

- It ended up being 11 albums with 30 songs each, plus an extra album with leftovers, but the other rules were mostly kept intact. Actually, the very initial project contemplated 4 albums, then it grew into 8, so...
- Each track was carefully researched online before inclusion (title, artist, relevance, date, charting). Nonetheless, the occasional mistake is to be expected. (Note: disc 6 track "Getting Away With It" probably has a glitch in the master tape after the 1min mark, and it shows on all versions ever released).
- All files in this original compilation are real lossless FLACs. They were collected from a myriad sources, and then all reconverted in order to eliminate previously existing tags, to check for compatibility and, as a whole, to make the collection more homogenized in compression, sound and everything. They're all tagged and exhaustively checked. IMPORTANT: no ReplayGain was applied! (Mostly because I can't understand RG very well, but also because I wanted the files to be as raw as possible.) I suggest you apply RG yourself according to your preferences.
- Some tracks have been substituted for less cliché, sometimes "better," sometimes more representative tracks by that same artist. Few tracks have been included out of mere personal preference, but even those had to always be relevant and follow the rules. Others went the opposite direction; their timing, genre and importance needed to be represented even when I didn't find the band/artist particularly exciting. One can argue about those that were left aside, but not about the ones included, because, frankly, they speak for themselves.
- Some tracks have been left aside for mere lack of room -- following the intended proposal of no more and no less than 30 tracks per album, which should be encompassing enough. Most of those leftovers were reunited as a bonus 12th disc. They can be considered replacements or complements to the collection. Feel free to reorganize your own compilation with them, always observing the rules.
- You are encouraged to add a new disc in some time, with tracks that continue the evolution of the "genre", always observing the rules.

- Note: some Irish bands (like My Bloody Valentine, Cranberries, Boomtown Rats, U2 and probably more) have been included because they shared mostly the same British sound and scene, and because of physical proximity -- even though, of course, Ireland is not part of the UK. ANOTHER EXCEPTION is The Easybeats, who were Australian, but of English descent, and are widely considered as part of the British Invasion of the 1960s.
